Welcome! June 2018 was a wonky month for Frugal Nesting.
The good traffic from May carried forward to the beginning of June and then out of nowhere the bottom dropped out. It was crazy! One day I had 872 views and the next I had 385.
Of course, I am the first one to tell other people not to panic when something like this happens. Just wait it out. But that is SO much easier said than done.
And it continued to drop…it didn’t go back up after a couple days. Views ultimately dropped down to 272 and I was feeling pretty bummed out.
Sure…we’ve all heard of the summer slump. And yes, we all know it’s dumb to put all of our eggs into one basket.
But honestly, you can’t help it if a ton of eggs just happen to jump into a specific basket. I mean, I really am trying to make my other baskets more enticing. But that one basket [Pinterest] sure is popular!
Anyway, I got SUPER lucky and it appears that this was just a temporary drop. After about a week it swung back up again and things seem to have leveled off to baseline again. Whew!
But boy is it scary when that happens. And as smaller bloggers, it really does make a difference for us. It impacts both our confidence and our pocketbook. The only advice I have here is to always stay the course, even when it feels like a lost cause.
And it may not swing back up right away. It could be a longer-term storm that you have to weather, but giving up should never be the solution. Neither is wallowing in self-pity. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and do whatever value-adding activity you can muster for your blog. It’s always worth it.
Now on to the good stuff…let’s talk about money, honey!
Why Publish An Income Report?
Well, there are a number of reasons, including:
- It’s a great excuse for me to sit down each month to see what is working, what is not, and where I landed for the month.
- I love reading other people’s income reports. I find them fascinating, but they are getting harder to find. So why not make my own?
- It can be helpful for newer bloggers to see one example like this from a smaller blog.
- And it will be fun to see the change over time.
June 2018 Blogging Income Update
Before expenses, I earned $290.19 blogging in June 2018.
Although this is $147.34 less than I made last month, I am still comfortable with this number. It’s still almost $300 more than I would have without my blog! Amiright?
I still cannot believe that it’s possible to make money like this from a blog. Can you? It’s just crazy to me!
Anyway, I’m very curious to see what the next few months hold income wise. July is already trending lower income-wise even though it’s holding steady in regards to traffic. This is likely due to the end of Q2 drop in advertising revenue seen across the industry. So I’m not going to sweat it!
June 2018 Online Income Breakdown – 290.19
- Affiliate Income – $84.79 total:
- Milkology Affiliate Income – $40.28
- Amazon Affiliate Income – $22.23
- Misc. Affiliate Income – $22.28
- Mediavine Display Advertising – $205.40
How Are Things Going at Frugal Nesting?
Frugal Nesting is consistent and holding its own, while I flail about like a crazy woman!
In May I focused everything on the blog. It was great and I really feel that I reaped the benefits of that.
I switched from what I consider to be the best beginner host, Bluehost, to Siteground, because I needed a more robust option to handle our growth. My goal is to hit 50,000 monthly pageviews before the end of 2018 and I need to be ready for that volume.
Frugal Nesting also underwent a significant facelift in May. We went from a free WordPress theme (Adelle) to the Genesis framework using the Captivating child theme by Restored316. I’m very happy with the results, even though I am still learning some of the new features!
I moved my mailing list from MailChimp to MailerLite. And am still setting up some automation and other fun things for my newsletter. I haven’t yet decided if I’m going to go with a weekly newsletter or biweekly…thoughts?
All of those big updates were the result of me working my way through Elite Blog Academy (EBA) by Ruth Soukup. It’s truly THE best option for building a successful blog from the ground up. Get on the mailing list now if you’re not already!
That was May. June was a TOTALLY different story! All of my energy was focused on my personal life and the blog went on auto-pilot. I didn’t even publish anything on Tuesday the 26th [or July 3rd]!
Two of my lovely childhood friends got married back home in Michigan and I was honored to be included in the wedding! I left the boys at home to fend for themselves, so you can only imagine the preparation that went into getting ready for the wedding and preparing my family for my absence! It was nuts!
Also, we have some things going on with our family right now. My Dad, who lives in another state, is very sick and some other things have been taking up quite a bit of focus. All of that on top of end-of-the-school-year activities, weekend parties, etc. have left little time for anything else. So the blog has suffered.
July is looking fairly similar, as we have a very full schedule and I have another cross-country trip on the horizon. One of these days I will get a better system in place to smoothly navigate times like this. But for now, I’m just hanging on tight for the rollercoaster ride!
In June 2018 we had a total of 22,946 page views, which is 2,532 less than the 25,478 that we had in May. Not too bad considering that wonky week-long drop and the expected summer slump!
I like to include a year over year screenshot to show the progress. Progress is really the only metric that means anything, particularly for smaller blogs.
June was clearly more volatile than May, but overall trending well above last year for users and pageviews. Lookin’ good!!
It’s remarkable how significant the growth has been year over year. Looking at that gives me renewed inspiration + motivation!
And if the traffic doesn’t do it, the increase in income is even better. I only made $91.40 in June 2017 – less than one-third of what I made this year!
